Maya is from Sindhuli. She was blind from birth. Her mother died of a serious illness when she was small and her father went missing. She was left with her grandfather begging at the stairs of Swaymbhunath (monkey temple). She was brought to Trinetra by Kancha Gurung and studies at the Laboratory School (school for the blind) in Kathmandu. She had no education before and is still studying in Grade 8 although she is 21 years old.
