Piers Helsen Rehab Centre
Nepal is the poorest country in South Asia. Its disabled children suffer more hardship than most of us could imagine. Often shunned by their parents out of economic necessity, children who need the most care often receive the least.
Due to the recent closure of a children’s home in Dhunche in Himalayan Nepal, over 30 disabled children are now in urgent need of a new care home. Their previous home had no qualified carers, no medical treatment, and few windows to protect these vulnerable children from the glacial winds. They were malnourished and without proper care. Many have returned to their families, and some have been placed in Dolma's partner schools with education and medical sponsorship.
Dolma Foundation aims at improving the quality of life of physically disabled children through rehabilitative programmes to commemorate Mr. Piers Helsen. Piers was a friend of Dolma and lived with the disabled children of Dhunche. He initiated this project among his many other philanthropic activities in Nepal and India. After his tragic death in 2014, Dolma and friends are continuing his work and naming the home in his memory.
The Foundation has identified Disabled Newlife Centre (DNC), Gokarna, Nepal to set up a rehabilitation center in its facility. Dolma Foundation will support to convert the existing multi-purpose room at DNC into a rehabilitation center by providing necessary rehab equipment for maximum benefits of the children. Dolma Foundation will also provide technical assistance on the management of the center and place three disabled children from Rasuwa. The rehabilitation center will provide rehabilitative exercise to improve sensory-motor functions, motion, and strengthen, balance and gait, stimulate weak nerves and muscles, endurance and cardio, relaxation.
